Most of you probably have the impression that I’m a pessimistic misanthrope—or a misanthropic pessimist. The truth is I’m not. I don’t want to have a poor opinion of my fellow Americans, or of humanity in general.
But considering the current state of America, I’m finding it harder and harder to believe that the same country that elected Trump and Bush also spawned such exceptional individuals as Thomas Jefferson, Mark Twain, Thomas Edison, and Walt Disney.
Then again, considering the current state of the world, I’m also finding it harder and harder to believe that our species managed to spawn equally exceptional human beings from Plato and Socrates to Shakespeare and Einstein. At this point, we probably need to agree that humanity is overrated:
