#102: The Internet
Who created the internet? Was it government? Or was it capitalism? Quite frankly, it doesn’t matter. Even if the government did invent the internet (which, in fact, it didn’t), it’s quite clear that the World Wide Web we have today is a product of the free market.
When the infrastructure that makes up the internet was first constructed, it was primarily used by the government to allow military bases to communicate with one another. Ever since the private sector took over around the late 80s and early 90s, the World Wide Web now allows the common citizen to use it to communicate with one another, shop for goods and services, and download movies and music.
What was once used to further military might has since been used to better the everyday lives of the common consumer. The government utilized the internet to maintain it military dominance. The free market used the internet in order to provide goods and services to people. What the government created, the free market has perfected, and the internet is a better place because of it.
